About Stewart Island

Stewart Island is New Zealand's third-largest island. Lying just 30km south of South Island, most of its land mass is protected within Rakiura National Park, making it a haven for native flora and fauna.

The island's scenery is truly magnificent. Densely forested hills descend directly to a coastline of rocky outcrops and deserted golden beaches. The sky frequently blazes with colour at dawn and dusk, giving rise to the island's Maori name Rakiura - land of the glowing skies.

With New Zealand's largest accessible population of native birds, Stewart Island is a birding enthusiast's paradise. Join a night tour and see the brown kiwi in its natural habitat. Or, visit the Ulva Island Bird Sanctuary and view some of New Zealand's rarest birds.

Stewart Island has one small village (Oban), which is home to approximately 400 people. The village has a small general store, a couple of craft shops and and a small number of restaurants.
